About the Project

McGuire's Miracle Productions, LLC, in conjunction with its parent company, FilmNC Capital Management, LLC, is pleased to announce the production of its award-caliber documentary production, McGuire's Miracle. Positioned for television broadcast and to be made available on DVD for purchase by the general public, this definitive production is centered around the miraculous events and colorful characters that fueled one of the most storied collegiate sports seasons ever - that of the undefeated 1957 University of North Carolina men's National Champion basketball team. Set against the charming backdrop of the beautiful UNC-Chapel Hill campus, this original documentary film presentation will chronicle the character-rich story of the men who coached and played the games when Tar Heel basketball came of age.

The story - told through compelling narration, insightful interviews, and a rich cornucopia of rare video footage and still photos - skillfully captures a dapper and dashing new UNC coach, Frank McGuire, and his unlikely crew of players, the latter of whom made their bones on the storied high school and recreational courts of the New York City metropolitan area. These players, that included standouts Lennie Rosenbluth, Joe Quigg, Bob Cunningham, Pete Brennan, Tommy Kearns and Bob Young, were the best that New York had to offer. With their bags packed, these players traveled on what came to be known as McGuire's famed north-to-south "Underground Railroad" to the destination small-town Chapel Hill campus.

The humor and drama of the story will be showcased against the texture of early rock 'n' roll music joined by popular musical standards and jazz of the '50s as these "big city" coaches and players blend into a seemingly foreign land. Within the story, viewers will become acquainted with the "backstory" of this special season, as the many southern "characters" and personalities provide depth and insight into this magical tale. All of these elements will come seamlessly together to provide one of the most enjoyable and satisfying sports stories of all time - culminating with the 32-0 Tar Heels beating the Wilt Chamberlain-led Kansas Jayhawks in triple overtime in the NCAA championship title game. Many sports historians concur that this was the best collegiate basketball game ever played!

Production Status

Much of the production work has been completed and $144,000 has been raised for the production. Extensive film footage and stills of the players and games have been secured and are in possession of the company; interviews of those associated with the season have been taped; and extensive research has been completed. Additional funding will be used to finish production, including taping additional interviews and continued dialogue with players and others associated with the '57 team to secure more of the extraordinary "local color" that makes McGuire's Miracle such an enjoyable story. The bulk of the remaining production work involves "putting all the pieces together," followed by post-production and packaging of a first-class, market-ready production.

The Schedule

Plans are to release this 51-minute film in 2017, making McGuire's Miracle available for television broadcast and purchase by the general public in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of this special championship season.

Regarding television broadcasts, sports films - both documentary and fiction - consistently attract impressive numbers of fans and viewers, and commercial spots within these broadcasts are highly coveted by advertisers. The seasoned McGuire's Miracle production team, the subject matter and a huge global audience for compelling basketball stories all suggest that this could be a most popular production among television audiences!
